No napping, henceforth, but certain smiles ensue.

Well, since for some reason several people are being nice enough to like my non-review, I'll just say there are probably several core books in any house that are read in the "formative" years when you are trying to figure out how to make the little urchins happy and/or get them to sleep, books you wear out, ripped and torn and ragged, spattered with baby food and milk and vomit, books that are indistinguishable from your parenting years and this is one of mine, one I look back with a kind of sweet longing, in spite of the fact there might at the time been partly desperation: "will he for the love of god not sleep?" But this is funny, silly, one of those where each occupant of a house piles on to the sleeping Gramma until the bed breaks (see James Thurber's "The Night the Bed Fell,") and all Holy Heck (children are involved here, now) breaks loose. Together author and illustrator have created a classic treasure for children and their children's children. This classic story by Audrey Wood and illustrated by Caldecott-honoree Don Wood is a must-have for the family library. Furry pets you yearn to stroke, floppy pillows, wet raindrops, and big, sleepy yawns, all convey the essence of rhymes and make them memorable. They supplement the tale, filling in charming details that go beyond the story and reflect a change in weather as well as in mood. Superb full-color illustrations bring the quiet moments and small scenes to life with variety and grace. It's a simple tale – just a cozy bed, with a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, a snoozing – but wait! There's a surprise, a delightful surprise, in store, and the youngest listeners will want to hear it again and again.

This gently story about "a napping house" will do all those things.

All is at peace until the appearance of an unexpected visitor and before you know it, no one is sleeping anymore!Ĭumulative rhymes are reassuring – they soothe and amuse and stay with us throughout our lives. In the napping house is a cozy bed piled high with a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, a snoozing cat, and a slumbering mouse. A gift-worthy hardcover edition of the classic cumulative tale that's perfect for bedtime, naptime.
